Herman Miller’s newest task chair revolutionises their product offering, with an Auto-Harmonic Tilt™ that ditches all manual adjustment while retaining Miller’s world-class ergonomic performance. Perfect for those who can’t stand fiddling with countless buttons and knobs, instead it uses the user’s body and seated position to automatically adjust.
Launched at Herman Miller’s Milan showroom in conjunction the Salone Del Mobile 2018, the space was transformed with the exterior draped in charcoal grey, punctuated by neon signs inviting visitors to ‘ENTER THE COSM’.
This stripped back new look for Miller hints at their design intent for the chair itself. Studio7.5, the design house responsible for this sure-to-be-iconic task chair, wanted to create a product that worked perfectly in agile workspaces from an industrial to a domestic look and feel.
Entering the space Studio7.5’s striking design towered above, slowly rotating in a variety of styles and finishes, each chair entirely monotone in its finish, from the frame and fabric weave through to the castor detailing.
Further into the showroom the new addition to the Miller portfolio was displayed in multiple settings showing its flexibility in the workplace.
Specifically designed for agile office environments, COSM incorporates an Auto-Harmonic Tilt™ mechanism. This means that once the user has set the chairs height no adjustment is necessary. The chair provides balanced support and movement with the user’s body, posture and seated position making sure the user is perfectly engaged with their task chair. No matter where the user chooses to sit the chair will seamlessly support their body.
“you might just forget you’re sitting in a chair at all”
Studio7.5 have previously collaborated with Herman Miller on a number of world-class designs, including both the Mirra and Mirra 2 task chairs and the Setu range. The newest addition is the culmination of 20 years research and countless hours of product development and prototyping creating a product that fits the human body so well that according to Studio7.5 ‘you might just forget you’re sitting in a chair at all’.
With a wide range of choices to suit any client, COSM’s thoughtful design comes in three back heights and 4 arm options (leaf, fixed, height adjustable and without arms).
The offering includes six colour options including Herman Miller’s more traditional palette (mineral, graphite, carbon) and three new statement colours:
Our favourite version is definitely the lowest back height, which incorporates a ‘lipped top’ with the weave rolling over the chair back, in nightfall (dark blue) with a leaf arm which slopes downwards cradling the users elbow. While this may seem odd when comparing to a conventional adjustable task chair arm it removes the cumbersome part of the arm that would normally get in the way when drawing the chair up to the desk (and alter the ergonomic performance of the chair).
