Extending the ‘workplace’ from physical office to an ‘experience’.

Employee experience continues to be a hot trend in HR and workforce conversation. This doesn’t come as a surprise. An experience led workplace adopts a communal mindset and encourages personal connections between employees. I’m sure we can all agree this would make a massive difference to  satisfaction and therefore profitability.

Offices shouldn’t be a boring place to just sit and do work anymore. Take inspiration from Hyperion’s office (click here). It needs to reflect brand identity and personality. Try introducing social breakout zones to encourage ‘casual collisions’ for employees. Rule out that awkward encounter of not knowing someones name at a work event.

Sounds easy right? – However, this goes beyond free fruit and coffee. Companies are introducing physical changes based on monitory occupancy. This includes tracking data on how people spend their time in the office. You might be annoyed to see how long *won’t mention any names* spends socialising by the water cooler. But this data will help you understand your unique office culture. In return it will help your business run more smoothly.

Increasing employee expectations

Forward-thinking offices are being designed around employee personalities to match working preferences. Experience-Driven offices focus on developing wellbeing, boosting happiness, community-building, and increasing morale. Sadly, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. On site features embody the culture of the company. Every workplace is different and therefore every work experience will be unique.

Work becomes an extension of life. Become an organisation of the future and implement this trend, I am sure your employees will appreciate it.

Some examples of experience-spaces include:

  • Massage and consultation spaces
  • Meditation areas
  • Yoga rooms
  • Rock climbing walls
  • Coffee hubs
  • Libraries
  • Game rooms and virtual reality spaces
  • Sports and active spaces
  • Music rooms

Brand Identity

There is a growing need to embed brand values into physical office environments. With this you can increase satisfaction and boost a sense of community. Such designs should be flexible, agile and support employees to function throughout their day seamlessly.

Employees that strongly identify with the brand will adopt positive attitudes. And in return exceed basic work responsibilities. Research shows that those who feel in charge of their work are more productive, happy and loyal to the company. Employees benefit from visual reminders. Therefore brand identity is a crucial feature of commercial office design.

Its important to express the right tone for your business. Remain authentic to your company culture. Those annoying jargon company value posters on the wall wont do the trick. Create an office people are proud to work in.
